But the LORD struck Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Abram's wife, Sarai.

Then Pharaoh gave his men orders about him, and they sent him away with his wife and all he had.

As the sun was setting, a deep sleep came over Abram, and suddenly great terror and darkness descended on him.

“As for Ishmael, I have heard you. I will certainly bless him; I will make him fruitful and will multiply him greatly. He will father twelve tribal leaders, and I will make him into a great nation.

And he said to him, “All right,[fn] I'll grant your request[fn] about this matter too and will not demolish the town you mentioned.

Abraham said about his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” So King Abimelech of Gerar had Sarah brought to him.

“Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will certainly die, you and all who are yours.”

This was very distressing to[fn] Abraham because of his son.

But Abraham complained to Abimelech because of the well that Abimelech's servants had seized.

He said to them, “If you are willing for me to bury my dead, listen to me and ask Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf

So the servant placed his hand under his master Abraham's thigh and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

“Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you? ' She responded, ‘The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.' So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.

And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah and took Rebekah to be his wife. Isaac loved her, and he was comforted after his mother's death.

Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife because she was childless. The LORD was receptive to his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.

When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say “my wife,” thinking, “The men of the place will kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is a beautiful woman.”

Then they dug another well and quarreled over that one also, so he named it Sitnah.[fn]

On that same day Isaac's servants came to tell him about the well they had dug, saying to him, “We have found water! ”

Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And Esau determined in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

Jacob loved Rachel, so he answered Laban, “I'll work for you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”

So Jacob worked seven years for Rachel, and they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

When morning came, there was Leah! So he said to Laban, “What have you done to me? Wasn't it for Rachel that I worked for you? Why have you deceived me? ”

“Give me my wives and my children that I have worked for, and let me go. You know how hard I have worked for you.”

When Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped off Joseph's robe, the long-sleeved robe that he had on.

“But when all goes well for you, remember that I was with you. Please show kindness to me by mentioning me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this prison.

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said about you that you can hear a dream and interpret it.”

“Since the dream was given twice to Pharaoh, it means that the matter has been determined by God, and he will carry it out soon.

Pharaoh removed his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's hand, clothed him with fine linen garments, and placed a gold chain around his neck.

When the whole land of Egypt was stricken with famine, the people cried out to Pharaoh for food. Pharaoh told all Egypt, “Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.”

Then they said to each other, “Obviously, we are being punished for what we did to our brother. We saw his deep distress when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why this trouble has come to us.”

When the days of mourning were over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, “If I have found favor with you, please tell Pharaoh that

“You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result ​— ​the survival of many people.

Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Appeal to the LORD to remove the frogs from me and my people. Then I will let the people go and they can sacrifice to the LORD.”

After Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the LORD for help concerning the frogs that he had brought against Pharaoh.

Pharaoh responded, “I will let you go and sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness, but don't go very far. Make an appeal for me.”

“Make an appeal to the LORD. There has been enough of God's thunder and hail. I will let you go; you don't need to stay any longer.”

So Moses said, “This is what the LORD says: About midnight I will go throughout Egypt,

“The LORD will fight for you, and you must be quiet.”

He caused their chariot wheels to swerve[fn][fn] and made them drive[fn] with difficulty. “Let's get away from Israel,” the Egyptians said, “because the LORD is fighting for them against Egypt! ”

Moses took the blood, splattered it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you concerning all these words.”

“Fasten both stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the Israelites. Aaron will carry their names on his two shoulders before the LORD as a reminder.

“The wealthy may not give more and the poor may not give less than half a shekel when giving the contribution to the LORD to atone for[fn] your lives.

So the LORD relented concerning the disaster he had said he would bring on his people.

The following day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a grave sin. Now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I will be able to atone for your sin.”

And the LORD inflicted a plague on the people for what they did with the calf Aaron had made.

“He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering so it can be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.

“If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, he is to present to the LORD a young, unblemished bull as a sin[fn] offering for the sin he has committed.

“then the assembly must present a young bull as a sin offering. They are to bring it before the tent of meeting when the sin they have committed in regard to the command becomes known.

“He is to offer this bull just as he did with the bull in the sin offering; he will offer it the same way. So the priest will make atonement on their behalf, and they will be forgiven.

“He must burn all its fat on the altar, like the fat of the fellowship sacrifice. In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf for that person's sin, and he will be forgiven.

“or if someone informs him about the sin he has committed, then he is to bring an unblemished female goat as his offering for the sin that he has committed.

“He is to remove all its fat just as the fat is removed from the fellowship sacrifice. The priest is to burn it on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf, and he will be forgiven.

“He is to remove all its fat just as the fat of the lamb is removed from the fellowship sacrifice. The priest will burn it on the altar along with the food offerings to the LORD. In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven.

“If someone incurs guilt in one of these cases, he is to confess he has committed that sin.

“In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf concerning the sin he has committed in any of these cases, and he will be forgiven. The rest will belong to the priest, like the grain offering.”

“If someone offends by sinning unintentionally in regard to any of the LORD's holy things,[fn] he must bring his penalty for guilt to the LORD: an unblemished ram from the flock (based on your assessment of its value in silver shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel) as a guilt offering.

“He must bring an unblemished ram from the flock according to your assessment of its value as a guilt offering to the priest. Then the priest will make atonement on his behalf for the error he has committed unintentionally, and he will be forgiven.

“When someone sins and offends the LORD by deceiving his neighbor in regard to a deposit, a security,[fn] or a robbery; or defrauds his neighbor;

“or anything else about which he swore falsely. He will make full restitution for it and add a fifth of its value to it. He is to pay it to its owner on the day he acknowledges his guilt.

“In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf before the LORD, and he will be forgiven for anything he may have done to incur guilt.”

“The priest is to put on his linen robe and linen undergarments.[fn] He is to remove the ashes of the burnt offering the fire has consumed on the altar, and place them beside the altar.

“Tell Aaron and his sons: This is the law of the sin offering. The sin offering is most holy and must be slaughtered before the LORD at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered.

“But no sin offering may be eaten if its blood has been brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement in the holy place; it must be burned.

“Now this is the law of the guilt[fn] offering; it is especially holy.

“The priest will burn them on the altar as a food offering to the LORD; it is a guilt offering.

“The guilt offering is like the sin offering; the law is the same for both. It belongs to the priest who makes atonement with it.

“If he presents it for thanksgiving, in addition to the thanksgiving sacrifice, he is to present unleavened cakes mixed with olive oil, unleavened wafers coated with oil, and well-kneaded cakes of fine flour mixed with oil.

This is the law for the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering, and the fellowship sacrifice,

“Take Aaron, his sons with him, the garments, the anointing oil, the bull of the sin[fn] offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread,

Then he brought the bull near for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull for the sin offering.

“The LORD commanded what has been done today in order to make atonement for you.

He said to Aaron, “Take a young bull for a sin[fn] offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without blemish, and present them before the LORD.

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Approach the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering; make atonement for yourself and the people.[fn] Sacrifice the people's offering and make atonement for them, as the LORD commanded.”

He burned the fat, the kidneys, and the fatty lobe of the liver from the sin offering on the altar, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Aaron presented the people's offering. He took the male goat for the people's sin offering, slaughtered it, and made a sin offering with it as he did before.

Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them. He came down after sacrificing the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the fellowship offering.

Then Moses inquired carefully about the male goat of the sin offering, but it had already been burned up. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's surviving sons, and asked,

But Aaron replied to Moses, “See, today they presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD. Since these things have happened to me, if I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been acceptable in the LORD's sight? ”

“This is the law concerning animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that swarm on the ground,

“When her days of purification are complete, whether for a son or daughter, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old male lamb for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin[fn] offering.

“the priest is to examine the person. If the scaly outbreak has spread on the skin, the priest does not need to look for yellow hair; the person is unclean.

“The person who has a case of serious skin disease is to have his clothes torn and his hair hanging loose, and he must cover his mouth and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean! '

“He is to slaughter the male lamb at the place in the sanctuary area where the sin offering and burnt offering are slaughtered, for like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest; it is especially holy.

“What is left of the oil in the priest's palm he is to put on the head of the one to be cleansed. In this way the priest will make atonement for him before the LORD.

“The bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought into the most holy place to make atonement, must be brought outside the camp and their hide, flesh, and waste burned.

“Atonement will be made for you on this day to cleanse you, and you will be clean from all your sins before the LORD.

“and make atonement for the most holy place. He will make atonement for the tent of meeting and the altar and will make atonement for the priests and all the people of the assembly.

“For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have appointed it to you to make atonement on the altar for[fn] your lives, since it is the lifeblood that makes atonement.

“The priest will make atonement on his behalf before the LORD with the ram of the guilt offering for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven for the sin he committed.

“You are also to prepare one male goat as a sin offering, and two male lambs a year old as a fellowship sacrifice.

“On this particular day you are not to do any work, for it is a Day of Atonement to make atonement for yourselves before the LORD your God.

“But if that individual has no relative to receive compensation, the compensation goes to the LORD for the priest, along with the atonement ram by which the priest will make atonement for the guilty person.

“then the man is to bring his wife to the priest. He is also to bring an offering for her of two quarts[fn] of barley flour. He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it because it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering for remembrance to draw attention to guilt.

“The priest is to offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to make atonement on behalf of the Nazirite, since he incurred guilt because of the corpse. On that day he is to consecrate his head again.

“The priest is to present these before the LORD and sacrifice the Nazirite's sin offering and burnt offering.

“These are the instructions about the Nazirite who vows his offering to the LORD for his consecration, in addition to whatever else he can afford; he must fulfill whatever vow he makes in keeping with the instructions for his consecration.”

“Next the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls. Sacrifice one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to the LORD, to make atonement for the Levites.

“From the Israelites, I have given the Levites exclusively to Aaron and his sons to perform the work for the Israelites at the tent of meeting and to make atonement on their behalf, so that no plague will come against the Israelites when they approach the sanctuary.”

“In regard to the Levites: From twenty-five years old or more, a man enters the service in the work at the tent of meeting.

Moses replied to them, “Wait here until I hear what the LORD commands for you.”

Moses said to Hobab, descendant of Reuel the Midianite and Moses's relative by marriage, “We're setting out for the place the LORD promised, ‘I will give it to you.' Come with us, and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things to Israel.”

“How long must I endure this evil community that keeps complaining about me? I have heard the Israelites' complaints that they make against me.

So the men Moses sent to scout out the land, and who returned and incited the entire community to complain about him by spreading a negative report about the land ​— ​

“and if it was done unintentionally without the community's awareness, the entire community is to prepare one young bull for a burnt offering as a pleasing aroma to the LORD, with its grain offering and drink offering according to the regulation, and one male goat as a sin offering.

“If one person sins unintentionally, he is to present a year-old female goat as a sin offering.

Then Moses told Aaron, “Take your firepan, place fire from the altar in it, and add incense. Go quickly to the community and make atonement for them, because wrath has come from the LORD; the plague has begun.”

The people then came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Intercede with the LORD so that he will take the snakes away from us.” And Moses interceded for the people.

“It will be a covenant of perpetual priesthood for him and his future descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”

“Have him stand before the priest Eleazar and the whole community, and commission him in their sight.

“And one male goat is to be offered as a sin offering to the LORD, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its drink offering.

“Instead, you must kill him. Your hand is to be the first against him to put him to death, and then the hands of all the people.

“When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it in order to capture it, do not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can get food from them. Do not cut them down. Are trees of the field human, to come under siege by you?

“Be sure to return it[fn] to him at sunset. Then he will sleep in it and bless you, and this will be counted as righteousness to you before the LORD your God.

The Gibeonites answered him, “It was clearly communicated to your servants that the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before you. We greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.

The descendants of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD promised Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.

“Are they not finding and dividing the spoil —

a girl or two[fn] for each warrior,

the spoil of colored garments for Sisera,

the spoil of an embroidered garment or two for my neck? ”[fn]

But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Would you plead Baal's case for him? Would you save him? Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him plead his own case because someone tore down his altar.”

His mother's relatives spoke all these words about him in the hearing of all the citizens of Shechem, and they were favorable to Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”

When he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “No! Not my daughter! You have devastated me! You have brought great misery on me.[fn] I have given my word to the LORD and cannot take it back.”

But Samson stayed in bed only until midnight. Then he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate along with the two gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. He put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking Hebron.

Everyone who saw it said, “Nothing like this has ever happened or has been seen since the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt until now.[fn] Think it over, discuss it, and speak up! ”

But the Israelites had compassion on their brothers, the Benjaminites, and said, “Today a tribe has been cut off from Israel.

But he gave a double[fn] portion to Hannah, for he loved her even though the LORD had kept her from conceiving.

When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair beside the road waiting, because he was anxious about the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the entire city cried out.

Samuel said, “Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD on your behalf.”

Then Samuel took a young lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. He cried out to the LORD on behalf of Israel, and the LORD answered him.

When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come on, let's go back, or my father will stop worrying about the donkeys and start worrying about us.”

“As for the donkeys that wandered away from you three days ago, don't worry about them because they've been found. And who does all Israel desire but you and all your father's family? ”

“As for me, I vow that I will not sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you. I will teach you the good and right way.

But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan die? He accomplished such a great deliverance for Israel! No, as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he worked with God's help today.” So the people redeemed Jonathan, and he did not die.

Then Saul had his own military clothes put on David. He put a bronze helmet on David's head and had him put on armor.

Saul was furious and resented this song. “They credited tens of thousands to David,” he complained, “but they only credited me with thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom? ”

“I'll go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are and talk to him about you. When I see what he says, I'll tell you.”

“By the LORD, the God of Israel, I will sound out my father by this time tomorrow or the next day. If I find out that he is favorable toward you, will I not send for you and tell you?

David answered the priest Ahimelech, “The king gave me a mission, but he told me, ‘Don't let anyone know anything about the mission I'm sending you on or what I have ordered you to do.' I have stationed my young men at a certain place.

“That's why all of you have conspired against me! Nobody tells me when my own son makes a covenant with Jesse's son. None of you cares about me or tells me that my son has stirred up my own servant to wait in ambush for me, as is the case today.”

When David learned that Saul was plotting evil against him, he said to the priest Abiathar, “Bring the ephod.”

“May you be blessed by the LORD,” replied Saul, “for you have shown concern for me.

“They were a wall around us, both day and night, the entire time we were with them herding the sheep.

When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the LORD who championed my cause against Nabal's insults and restrained his servant from doing evil. The LORD brought Nabal's evil deeds back on his own head.”

Then David sent messengers to speak to Abigail about marrying him.

Abner was very angry about Ish-bosheth's accusation. “Am I a dog's head[fn] who belongs to Judah? ” he asked. “All this time I've been loyal to the family of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends and haven't betrayed you to David, but now you accuse me of wrongdoing with this woman!

“Now take action, because the LORD has spoken concerning David: ‘Through my servant David I will save my people Israel from the power of the Philistines and the power of all Israel's enemies.' ”

Now, LORD God, fulfill the promise forever that you have made to your servant and his house. Do as you have promised,

Then David said, “I'll show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.”

So David sent his emissaries to console Hanun concerning his father. However, when they arrived in the land of the Ammonites,

“Be strong! Let's prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD's will be done.”[fn]

“Because he has done this thing and shown no pity, he must pay four lambs for that lamb.”

David pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted, went home, and spent the night lying on the ground.

The king told the woman, “Go home. I will issue a command on your behalf.”

while all his servants marched past him. Then all the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and the people of Gath— six hundred men who came with him from there ​— ​marched past the king.

After they had gone, Ahimaaz and Jonathan climbed out of the well and went and informed King David. They told him, “Get up and immediately ford the river, for Ahithophel has given this advice against you.”

All the men of Judah responded to the men of Israel, “Because the king is our relative. Why does this make you angry? Have we ever eaten anything of the king's or been honored at all? ”[fn]

During David's reign there was a famine for three successive years, so David inquired[fn] of the LORD. The LORD answered, “It is due to Saul and to his bloody family, because he killed the Gibeonites.”

“Very well,” Bathsheba replied. “I will speak to the king for you.”

He spoke about trees, from the cedar in Lebanon to the hyssop growing out of the wall. He also spoke about animals, birds, reptiles, and fish.

Then Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying, “I have heard your message; I will do everything you want regarding the cedar and cypress timber.

Blessed be the LORD God of Israel!

He spoke directly to my father David,

and he has fulfilled the promise by his power.

He said,

She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your words and about your wisdom is true.

The king did not listen to the people, because this turn of events came from the LORD to carry out his word, which the LORD had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.

This was because Jeroboam had angered[fn] the LORD God of Israel by the sins he had committed and had caused Israel to commit.

This happened because of all the sins of Baasha and those of his son Elah, which they committed and caused Israel to commit, angering the LORD God of Israel with their worthless idols.

Then the king of Israel called for all the elders of the land and said, “Recognize[fn] that this one is only looking for trouble, for he demanded my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, and I didn't turn him down.”

“I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have angered me and caused Israel to sin.'

Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite:

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man who can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”

“The king shouldn't say that! ” Jehoshaphat replied.

The messenger who went to call Micaiah instructed him, “Look, the words of the prophets are unanimously favorable for the king. So let your words be like theirs, and speak favorably.”

Then Micaiah said, “Therefore, hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and the whole heavenly army was standing by him at his right hand and at his left hand.

The king of Aram was enraged because of this matter, and he called his servants and demanded of them, “Tell me, which one of us is for the king of Israel? ”

When the woman returned from the land of the Philistines at the end of seven years, she went to appeal to the king for her house and field.

While he was telling the king how Elisha restored the dead son to life, the woman whose son he had restored to life came to appeal to the king for her house and field. So Gehazi said, “My lord the king, this is the woman and this is the son Elisha restored to life.”

The silver from the guilt offering and the sin offering was not brought to the LORD's temple since it belonged to the priests.

“Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the royal spokesman, whom his master the king of Assyria sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore, offer a prayer for the surviving remnant.' ”

The king had heard concerning King Tirhakah of Cush, “Look, he has set out to fight against you.” So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,

Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “The LORD, the God of Israel says, ‘I have heard your prayer to me about King Sennacherib of Assyria.'

“Go and inquire of the LORD for me, for the people, and for all Judah about the words in this book that has been found. For great is the LORD's wrath that is kindled against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words of this book in order to do everything written about us.”

But Aaron and his sons did all the work of the most holy place. They presented the offerings on the altar of burnt offerings and on the altar of incense to make atonement for Israel according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

he allowed no one to oppress them;

he rebuked kings on their behalf:

Then David said, “I'll show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.”

So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. However, when David's emissaries arrived in the land of the Ammonites to console him,

It was reported to David about his men, so he sent messengers to meet them, since the men were deeply humiliated. The king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards grow back; then return.”

“Be strong! Let's prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD's will be done.”[fn]

This command was also evil in God's sight, so he afflicted Israel.

“Now, my son, may the LORD be with you, and may you succeed in building the house of the LORD your God, as he said about you.

David assembled all the leaders of Israel in Jerusalem: the leaders of the tribes, the leaders of the divisions in the king's service, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and cattle of the king and his sons, along with the court officials, the fighting men, and all the best soldiers.

along with all his reign, his might, and the incidents that affected him and Israel and all the kingdoms of the surrounding lands.

They did not turn aside from the king's command regarding the priests and the Levites concerning any matter or concerning the treasuries.

She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your words and about your wisdom is true.

The remaining events of Solomon's reign, from beginning to end, are written in the Events of the Prophet Nathan, the Prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and the Visions of the Seer Iddo concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat.

The king did not listen to the people because the turn of events came from God, in order that the LORD might carry out his word that he had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.

All Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They had sought him with all sincerity, and he was found by them. So the LORD gave them rest on every side.

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man who can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”

“The king shouldn't say that,” Jehoshaphat replied.

The messenger who went to call Micaiah instructed him, “Look, the words of the prophets are unanimously favorable for the king. So let your words be like theirs, and speak favorably.”

So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn't I tell you he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster? ”

Then Jehu looked for Ahaziah, and Jehu's soldiers captured him (he was hiding in Samaria). So they brought Ahaziah to Jehu, and they killed him. The soldiers buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of Jehoshaphat who sought the LORD with all his heart.” So no one from the house of Ahaziah had the strength to rule the kingdom.

As she looked, there was the king standing by his pillar[fn] at the entrance. The commanders and the trumpeters were by the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets while the singers with musical instruments were leading the praise. Athaliah tore her clothes and screamed, “Treason! Treason! ”

So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said, “Why haven't you required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by the LORD's servant Moses and the assembly of Israel for the tent of the testimony?

They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats as a sin offering for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah. Then he told the descendants of Aaron, the priests, to offer them on the altar of the LORD.

Then they brought the goats for the sin offering right into the presence of the king and the congregation, who laid their hands on them.

A large number of the people ​— ​many from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun ​— ​were ritually unclean, yet they had eaten the Passover contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah had interceded for them, saying, “May the good LORD provide atonement on behalf of

He also wrote letters to mock the LORD, the God of Israel, saying against him:

Just like the national gods of the lands that did not rescue their people from my power, so Hezekiah's God will not rescue his people from my power.

King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed about this and cried out to heaven,

“Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that was found. For great is the LORD's wrath that is poured out on us because our ancestors have not kept the word of the LORD in order to do everything written in this book.”

See that you not neglect this matter. Otherwise, the damage will increase and the royal interests[fn] will suffer.

So if it pleases the king, let a search of the royal archives[fn] in Babylon be conducted to see if it is true that a decree was issued by King Cyrus to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. Let the king's decision regarding this matter be sent to us.

In the first year of King Cyrus, he issued a decree concerning the house of God in Jerusalem:

Let the house be rebuilt as a place for offering sacrifices, and let its original foundations be retained.[fn] Its height is to be ninety feet[fn] and its width ninety feet,

For the dedication of God's house they offered one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, and four hundred lambs, as well as twelve male goats as a sin offering for all Israel ​— ​one for each Israelite tribe.

So we fasted and pleaded with our God about this, and he was receptive to our prayer.

The exiles who had returned from the captivity offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, and seventy-seven lambs, along with twelve male goats as a sin offering. All this was a burnt offering for the LORD.

So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered in Jerusalem within the three days. On the twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people sat in the square at the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain.

“Let our leaders represent the entire assembly. Then let all those in our towns who have married foreign women come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of each town, in order to avert the fierce anger of our God concerning[fn] this matter.”

They pledged[fn] to send their wives away, and being guilty, they offered a ram from the flock for their guilt;

Hanani, one of my brothers, arrived with men from Judah, and I questioned them about Jerusalem and the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile.

let your eyes be open and your ears be attentive to hear your servant's prayer that I now pray to you day and night for your servants, the Israelites. I confess the sins[fn] we have committed against you. Both I and my father's family have sinned.

Then the king asked me, “What is your request? ”

So I prayed to the God of the heavens

After I made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “Don't be afraid of them. Remember the great and awe-inspiring Lord, and fight for your countrymen, your sons and daughters, your wives and homes.”

“Wherever you hear the sound of the ram's horn, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us! ”

the bread displayed before the LORD,[fn] the daily grain offering, the regular burnt offering, the Sabbath and New Moon offerings, the appointed festivals, the holy things, the sin offerings to atone for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.

Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on top of the wall, and I appointed two large processions that gave thanks. One went to the right on the wall, toward the Dung Gate.

The second thanksgiving procession went to the left, and I followed it with half the people along the top of the wall, past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall,

The king consulted the wise men who understood the times,[fn] for it was his normal procedure to confer with experts in law and justice.

Mordecai also gave him a copy of the written decree issued in Susa ordering their destruction, so that Hathach might show it to Esther, explain it to her, and command her to approach the king, implore his favor, and plead with him personally for her people.

They found the written report of how Mordecai had informed on Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs who guarded the entrance, when they planned to assassinate King Ahasuerus.

The king asked, “Who is in the court? ” Now Haman was just entering the outer court of the palace to ask the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows he had prepared for him.

Harbona, one of the king's eunuchs, said, “There is a gallows seventy-five feet[fn] tall at Haman's house that he made for Mordecai, who gave the report that saved[fn] the king.”

The king said, “Hang him on it.”

Whenever a round of banqueting was over, Job would send for his children and purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for[fn] all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have sinned, having cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job's regular practice.

Terrors frighten him on every side

and harass him at every step.

He covers his hands with lightning

and commands it to hit its mark.

Can you pull in Leviathan with a hook

or tie his tongue down with a rope?

“Now take seven bulls and seven rams, go to my servant Job, and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. Then my servant Job will pray for you. I will surely accept his prayer and not deal with you as your folly deserves. For you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.”

After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes and doubled his previous possessions.

LORD, do not punish me in your anger

or discipline me in your wrath.

You do not delight in sacrifice and offering;

you open my ears to listen.[fn]

You do not ask for a whole burnt offering or a sin offering.

May he live long!

May gold from Sheba be given to him.

May prayer be offered for him continually,

and may he be blessed all day long.

Glorious things are said about you,

city of God.Selah

For he will give his angels orders concerning you,

to protect you in all your ways.

How can I repay the LORD

for all the good he has done for me?

Because of my brothers and friends,

I will say, “May peace be in you.”[fn]

LORD, set up a guard for my mouth;

keep watch at the door of my lips.

for they will be a garland of favor on your head

and pendants[fn] around your neck.

They will be life for you[fn]

and adornment[fn] for your neck.

until an arrow pierces its[fn] liver,

like a bird darting into a snare —

he doesn't know it will cost him his life.

I applied my mind to examine and explore through wisdom all that is done under heaven. God has given people[fn] this miserable task to keep them occupied.

I said to myself, “This happens so that God may test the children of Adam and they may see for themselves that they are like animals.”

Don't say, “Why were the former days better than these? ”

since it is not wise of you to ask this.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity, consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that no one can discover anything that will come after him.

Keep[fn] the king's command because of your oath made before God.

The vision that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:

“For Aram, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has plotted harm against you. They say,

When they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the spiritists who chirp and mutter,” shouldn't a people inquire of their God?[fn] Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?

When the news reaches Egypt,

they will be in anguish over the news about Tyre.

He stretched out his hand over the sea;

he made kingdoms tremble.

The LORD has commanded

that the Canaanite fortresses be destroyed.

In the streets they cry[fn] for wine.

All joy grows dark;

earth's rejoicing goes into exile.

I will camp in a circle around you;

I will besiege you with earth ramps,

and I will set up my siege towers against you.

“Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the royal spokesman, whom his master the king of Assyria sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore offer a prayer for the surviving remnant.' ”

Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “The LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘Because you prayed to me about King Sennacherib of Assyria,

In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Set your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.' ”[fn]

Lord, by such things people live,

and in every one of them my spirit finds life;

you have restored me to health

and let me live.

This is what the LORD,

the Holy One of Israel and its Maker, says:

“Ask me what is to happen to[fn] my sons,

and instruct me about the work of my hands.

“I call a bird of prey[fn] from the east,

a man for my purpose from a far country.

Yes, I have spoken; so I will also bring it about.

I have planned it; I will also do it.

so he will sprinkle many nations.[fn]

Kings will shut their mouths because of him,

for they will see what had not been told them,

and they will understand what they had not heard.

Yet he himself bore our sicknesses,

and he carried our pains;

but we in turn regarded him stricken,

struck down by God, and afflicted.

Yet the LORD was pleased to crush him severely.[fn]

When[fn] you make him a guilt offering,

he will see his seed, he will prolong his days,

and by his hand, the LORD's pleasure will be accomplished.

“I will pronounce my judgments against them for all the evil they did when they abandoned me to burn incense to other gods and to worship the works of their own hands.

“I[fn] observed that it was because unfaithful Israel had committed adultery that I had sent her away and had given her a certificate of divorce. Nevertheless, her treacherous sister Judah was not afraid but also went and prostituted herself.

“As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not offer a cry or a prayer on their behalf, and do not beg me, for I will not listen to you.

“for when I brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak with them or command them concerning burnt offering and sacrifice.

“As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not raise up a cry or a prayer on their behalf, for I will not be listening when they call out to me at the time of their disaster.

This is what the LORD says: “Concerning all my evil neighbors who attack the inheritance that I bequeathed to my people, Israel, I am about to uproot them from their land, and I will uproot the house of Judah from them.

This is what the LORD said to me: “Go and buy yourself a linen undergarment and put it on.[fn] But do not put it in water.”

“Take the underwear that you bought and are wearing,[fn] and go at once to the Euphrates[fn] and hide it in a rocky crevice.”

“Just as underwear clings to one's waist, so I fastened the whole house of Israel and of Judah to me” ​— ​this is the LORD's declaration ​— ​“so that they might be my people for my fame, praise, and glory, but they would not obey.

This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:

Then the LORD said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of these people.

“Therefore, this is what the LORD says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, though I did not send them, and who say, ‘There will never be sword or famine in this land.' By sword and famine these prophets will meet their end.

“I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of Manasseh son of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.

You know, LORD;

remember me and take note of me.

Avenge me against my persecutors.

In your patience,[fn] don't take me away.

Know that I suffer disgrace for your honor.

“For this is what the LORD says concerning sons and daughters born in this place as well as concerning the mothers who bear them and the fathers who father them in this land:

“However, if that nation about which I have made the announcement turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the disaster I had planned to do to it.

“However, if it does what is evil in my sight by not listening to me, I will relent concerning the good I had said I would do to it.

“Inquire of the LORD on our behalf, since King Nebuchadnezzar[fn] of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the LORD will perform for us something like all his past wondrous works so that Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”

Another man was also prophesying in the name of the LORD ​— ​Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like all those of Jeremiah.

This is what the LORD said to me: “Make chains and yoke bars for yourself and put them on your neck.

“Pursue the well-being[fn] of the city I have deported you to. Pray to the LORD on its behalf, for when it thrives, you will thrive.”

Ask and see

whether a male can give birth.

Why then do I see every man

with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor

and every face turned pale?

“This is what the LORD says:

Only if the heavens above can be measured

and the foundations of the earth below explored,

will I reject all of Israel's descendants

because of all they have done —

this is the LORD's declaration.

“For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning the houses of this city and the palaces of Judah's kings, the ones torn down for defense against the assault ramps and the sword:

“This city will bear on my behalf a name of joy, praise, and glory before all the nations of the earth, who will hear of all the prosperity I will give them. They will tremble with awe because of all the good and all the peace I will bring about for them.

The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the scribe. Jehudi then read it in the hearing of the king and all the officials who were standing by the king.

Nevertheless, King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, requesting, “Please pray to the LORD our God on our behalf! ”

But Gedaliah son of Ahikam responded to Johanan son of Kareah, “Don't do that! What you're saying about Ishmael is a lie.”

the prophet Jeremiah and said, “May our petition come before you; pray to the LORD your God on our behalf, on behalf of this entire remnant (for few of us remain out of the many, as you can see with your own eyes),

“You have gone astray at the cost of your lives[fn] because you are the ones who sent me to the LORD your God, saying, ‘Pray to the LORD our God on our behalf, and as for all that the LORD our God says, tell it to us, and we'll act accordingly.'

This is the word of the LORD that came to the prophet Jeremiah about Elam[fn] at the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah.

Let all their wickedness come before you,

and deal with them

as you have dealt with me

because of all my transgressions.

For my groans are many,

and I am sick at heart.

Arise, cry out in the night

from the first watch of the night.

Pour out your heart like water

before the Lord's presence.

Lift up your hands to him

for the lives of your children

who are fainting from hunger

at the head of every street.

Why should any living person complain,

any man, because of the punishment for his sins?

Because of this, our heart is sick;

because of these, our eyes grow dim:

“I adorned you with jewelry, putting bracelets on your wrists and a necklace around your neck.

“As for you, son of man, your people are talking about you near the city walls and in the doorways of their houses. One person speaks to another, each saying to his brother, ‘Come and hear what the message is that comes from the LORD! '

“Gomer with all its troops; and Beth-togarmah from the remotest parts of the north along with all its troops ​— ​many peoples are with you.

“You, all of your troops, and many peoples with you will advance, coming like a thunderstorm; you will be like a cloud covering the land.

“ ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Are you the one I spoke about in former times through my servants, the prophets of Israel, who for years prophesied in those times that I would bring you against them?

“You, all your troops, and the peoples who are with you will fall on the mountains of Israel. I will give you as food to every kind of predatory bird and to the wild animals.

Then the man said to me, “The northern and southern chambers that face the courtyard are the holy chambers where the priests who approach the LORD will eat the most holy offerings. There they will deposit the most holy offerings ​— ​the grain offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings ​— ​for the place is holy.

“and they will be ashamed of all that they have done. Reveal[fn] the design of the temple to them ​— ​its layout with its exits and entrances ​— ​its complete design along with all its statutes, design specifications, and laws. Write it down in their sight so that they may observe its complete design and all its statutes and may carry them out.

“You are to give a bull from the herd as a sin offering to the Levitical priests who are from the offspring of Zadok, who approach me in order to serve me.” This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.

“Then you are to take away the bull for the sin offering, and it must be burned outside the sanctuary in the place appointed for the temple.

“And the quota from the flock is one animal out of every two hundred from the well-watered pastures of Israel. These are for the grain offerings, burnt offerings, and fellowship offerings, to make atonement for the people.” This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.

He asked Arioch, the king's officer, “Why is the decree from the king so harsh? ”[fn] Then Arioch explained the situation to Daniel.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, “Nebuchadnezzar, we don't need to give you an answer to this question.

“I've heard that you have a spirit of the gods in you, and that insight, intelligence, and extraordinary wisdom are found in you.

“However, I have heard about you that you can give interpretations and solve problems. Therefore, if you can read this inscription and give me its interpretation, you will be clothed in purple, have a gold chain around your neck, and have the third highest position in the kingdom.”

Then Belshazzar gave an order, and they clothed Daniel in purple, placed a gold chain around his neck, and issued a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Then they replied to the king, “Daniel, one of the Judean exiles, has ignored you, the king, and the edict you signed, for he prays three times a day.”

“I approached one of those who were standing by and asked him to clarify all this. So he let me know the interpretation of these things:

“Then I wanted to be clear about the fourth beast, the one different from all the others, extremely terrifying, with iron teeth and bronze claws, devouring, crushing, and trampling with its feet whatever was left.

While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my petition before the LORD my God concerning the holy mountain of my God ​— ​

“However, I will tell you what is recorded in the book of truth. (No one has the courage to support me against those princes except Michael, your prince.

The word of the LORD that came to Micah the Moreshite ​— ​what he saw regarding Samaria and Jerusalem in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
