Gardens:
mentioned in Scripture, of Eden (Gen 2:8,9); Ahab's garden of herbs (1Ki 21:2); the royal garden (2Ki 21:18); the royal garden at Susa (Est 1:5); the garden of Joseph of Arimathea (Jhn 19:41); of Gethsemane (Jhn 18:1).
The "king's garden" mentioned 2Ki 25:4, Neh 3:15, was near the Pool of Siloam.
Gardens were surrounded by hedges of thorns (Isa 5:5) or by walls of stone (Pro 24:31). "Watch-towers" or "lodges" were also built in them (Isa 1:8; Mar 12:1), in which their keepers sat. On account of their retirement they were frequently used as places for secret prayer and communion with God (Gen 24:63; Mat 26:30-36; Jhn 1:48; 18:1,2). The dead were sometimes buried in gardens (Gen 23:19,20; 2Ki 21:18,26; 1Sa 25:1; Mar 15:46; Jhn 19:41). (See PARADISE.)

The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
