TROUBLED HEARTS.
I. LET NOT YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED.
A. The reason He said this to them is their hopes for the Kingdom of God are soon going to be dashed.
1. The whole while they had been following Him, they were expecting Him to establish His kingdom on the earth at any moment.
2. They had according to the words of Peter, "Forsaken all to follow Him."
3. He had tried to tell them that He was going to suffer death at the hands of sinful men, but would rise again the third day, but it just didn't sink in.
4. He knew when they saw Him die on the cross and His body put in the tomb, they were going to be dismayed and troubled.
B. Their hearts were troubled because He had been talking about going away from them.
1. They had come to depend and to rely on Him.
2. There was always love and excitement around Him.
3. Having been with Him for three years, they could not imagine life without Him.
C. One of the most common causes for troubled hearts is the uncertainty of the future.
1. There are many people who die a thousand deaths fearing one.
2. How will I survive, how will I get by?
3. Yesterday is gone, I do not worry much about that unless my deeds yesterday may come back to haunt me tomorrow.
4. But it is tomorrow that gives me great concern.
II. THE ANSWER FOR THE TROUBLED HEART.
A. Believe in Me. He said, "You believe in God believe also in Me."
1. He is saying, "Trust Me."
2. The cure for a troubled heart is always trust in Jesus.
B. Looking forward to the glorious future. "In My Father's house are many mansions, I go to prepare a place for you."
1. He had been telling them that He was going away, now He is telling them why He is going away.
2. He is going to prepare a place for them in His Father's house.
3. David had spoken about the Father's house, "And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
4. Their tomorrows were going to be very bright with excitement.
5. Their futures were secured.
6. He had told them not to worry about tomorrow, what they were going to eat, drink or wear, that their Father knew all about them, and would take care of their tomorrows.
7. Heathens worried about such things, but our Father fed the birds and clothed the fields, and surely He would take care of all of their needs.
C. Let not your heart be troubled, I will come again to get you and to take you to My Father's house that you might be with Me forever.
1. Surely the hope of every believer is that of eternal life in the beauty, love and joy in the kingdom of God.
2. Someone has said, "When the outlook is bad, try the uplook."
D. He will pray that the Father will give them another Comforter, to abide with them forever.
1. The word Comforter in Greek is "paracleton" which means one who comes alongside to help.
2. I have been alongside of you helping you for the last three years, now I will ask the Father to give you the Holy Spirit who will come alongside of you and help you.
3. When He comes He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance the things I have said to you.
4. We read so many times how that later they remembered the words of Jesus.
JOH 2:22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
JOH 12:16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and [that] they had done these things unto him.
Act 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
E. He will not leave them comfortless. Here the Greek word is "orphanous" from which we get our English word orphan. I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you.
1. I am not deserting you.
2. I will take care of you, whatever you need, just ask the Father in My name, and He will give it to you.
F. The Father loves you and will manifest Himself to you.
1. Note we now have the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with us.
2. The Holy Spirit alongside to help.
3. The Son has promised to come to them that they would not be as orphans.
4. And the Father who loves them will manifest Himself to them.
G. He and the Father will come and make their abode with us.
1. They will come and live in us.
2. The heavens of heavens cannot contain Him, yet He lives within my heart.
3. Our bodies have become the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in us.
4. The triune God lives in me. If God be for us, who can be against us?
5. John said, "Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world."
H. Let not your heart be troubled for, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you."
1. Paul wrote to the Philippians about the peace that passed human understanding.
2. Jesus was at perfect peace with the Father and thus was at perfect peace with Himself.
3. You can never have peace with yourself until you have peace with God.
4. This peace that He gives to you is not as the world gives.
a. The world can often have peace for a moment, but it quickly fades away.
b. Look at how quickly the joy of the world fades.
c. Look at how fickle the love of the world is.
d. You can be the world's darling today, and its goat tomorrow.
III. "LET NOT YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED, NEITHER LET IT BE AFRAID."
A. This is now a command of Jesus to His followers, do not worry and do not fear.
B. What does that mean if you are worried or are fearful?
1. You have a lack of trust in His words.
2. You are not yet secure in His love, for perfect love casts out all fear.
