Exposition of Esther - Chapter Nine

How was God’s Providence at Work in Defeating the Enemies of the Jews?

  1. In God’s providence the Jews overpowered those who hated them.
    1. Esther 9:1-7
      • No one could withstand them out of fear of the Jews. (Esther 6:13)
      • Even the king’s officials throughout the provinces helped the Jews because of their fear of Mordecai.
      • His reputation and fame had spread before him.
      • The sword of the Jews destroyed many: 500 then 300 in Shushan, plus another 75,000 throughout the provinces.
  2. In God’s providence, Haman’s seed of enmity against the woman was killed and hung.
    1. Esther 9:12-14
      • Haman’s ten sons were also killed, putting a stop to his seed of enmity against the woman.
  3. In God’s providence, the Jews are given rest and feasting.
    1. Esther 9:17-19
      • The Jews rested from their enemies and feasted on the 14th of Adar.
      • The Jews of Shushan rested on the 15th of Adar.
    2. In God’s providence, Mordecai and Esther sent forth another edict.
      • Esther 9:20-32
        • On the 14th and 15th of Adar, an annual celebration of the Jews’ deliverance from their enemies was established as a memorial feast called “Purim.”
