What Did Jesus Do before He Came to Earth?

What Everyone Needs to Know about Jesus – Question 9

The Bible teaches that Jesus existed before He came to earth as a human being. Scripture also tells us some of the things that He did before He became human. We can list them as follows.

1. He Was the Creator of the Universe

The Bible says that Jesus was the Creator of the entire universe. John wrote the following about this in his gospel. He said,

All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being. (John 1:3 NRSV)

Note that all things were made by Him. Jesus, therefore, is the Creator.

The Apostle Paul wrote about Jesus being the one who created “all things.” He wrote the following to the Colossians:

Everything was created by him, everything in heaven and on earth, everything seen and unseen, including all forces and powers, and all rulers and authorities. All things were created by God’s Son, and everything was made for him. (Colossians 1:16 CEV)

The entire universe was made by Him.

2. Jesus Preserved the Universe after He Created It

There is something else that we learn from the Bible. Jesus Christ, God the Son, not only created the universe and framed the various ages, He also preserved His creation. Paul also wrote about this to the Colossians:

He existed before everything else began, and he holds all creation together. (Colossians 1:17 NLT)

He is the One who holds everything in the universe together. In other words, the reason as to why all things are held together is because of Jesus Christ! This is quite a claim.

The writer to the Hebrews takes this a step further. He says that all things in the universe are actually held together by His powerful Word. We read,

He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. (Hebrews 1:3 NRSV)

Jesus’ work of preservation continues until today.

In sum, we find at least two important things which Jesus did before He came to earth. First, He created all things. Second, He sustained that creation.

Summary – Question 9
What Did Jesus Do before He Came to Earth?

God the Son, Jesus Christ has been God from all eternity. The Bible makes it clear that Jesus did not have His origin as a babe in Bethlehem. Scripture also tells us about some of the things which He did before coming to earth. For one thing, we find that He was certainly not inactive before He came to earth. Two things are emphasized.

First, Jesus was the Creator of the entire universe. In other words, before He came to the earth He was busy creating all things.

Not only has God the Son created all things, He upholds His creation through His powerful word. All things in the universe are held together through the Word of God the Son. He is the force which has kept all things running intact. He continues to preserve the universe to this day.

Consequently we find Him active before He came to earth as a human being.
