在以色列第一任国王扫罗的率领下，以色列人在以拉谷上方的一座山上扎营。以拉在希伯来语中意为“橡树”。非利士人站在山的一侧，而以色列人则站在山谷另一侧的山上。由于两支军队都扎营在彼此相对的山上，中间隔着山谷，因此可以想象，由于以拉谷是一个天然的露天剧场，因此噪音会更大。如果两支军队从这些位置相互冲锋，山谷底部将成为战线的前沿。很可能大卫后来会在以拉谷底部的小溪里挑选五块光滑的石头作为投石器的弹药。
