撒母耳记上3章1节记载： “童子撒母耳在以利面前事奉耶和华。那时耶和华的话甚少，异象也少。” （第1节）撒母耳当时还是个孩子，在会幕中服事，跟随以利。以利是公元前11世纪末以色列的大祭司。这一时期紧随动荡的士师时代之后，由于道德普遍败坏（士师记21章25节），属灵领袖亟需更新。在这黑暗之中，撒母耳即将成为一道光，一位忠实的先知，预示着神圣启示的重要性，并指向在耶稣身上所成就的终极启示。
