少量的腐化剂 (死苍蝇) 可以破坏大量的芬芳事物 (做香的膏油发出臭气)。同样，一点愚昧也能败坏智慧和尊荣。这一个比喻与耶稣使用"酵"来描述罪恶的说明相似。只需要一点点 "酵" 就能使一大块面团发起，一点罪恶也能败坏整个团体 (马太福音 16:6)。这一点也与所罗门在 9 章末尾的陈述相似，"一个罪人能败坏许多善事"。
愚昧是智慧的对立面。智慧人的心居右；愚昧人的心居左。愚昧人所做的选择，是智慧人所做之选择的对立面，他们的心使各人背道而驰。这就意味着智慧人和愚昧人拥有对立的观点角度和对立的目标。
每个人都有一种与生俱来的意识，允许他们洞察智慧和愚昧的差异。这一点很明显，我们可以称它为 "常识"。事实上，并且愚昧人行路显出无知，对众人说，他是愚昧人。然而，人们可能不会公开承认那显而易见的愚昧。这可能是少量愚昧能够污染大量常识的另一种方式。

所罗门建议我们：掌权者的心若向你发怒时，不要离开你的本位，因为柔和能免大过。译为柔和/镇定的词是 "marpe" 通常被译为 "健康" 或 "治疗"。对于大过，比如，忿怒的治疗就是柔和。柔和镇定要求对周边的环境保持不担忧的状态。掌权者的发怒指我们是危险的，但合宜的回应是不要做出反应。保持镇定，不要反击，这是对不稳定环境的治疗。
译为 "发怒" 的词是 "ruah"，意思是 "灵" 或 "风"。同样的字也用于 "捕风" 一词，是所罗门用作 "hebel" 或蒸气的同义词 (见传道书 1:2 的注释)。掌权者的发怒来自他的灵，是以情绪的方式倾倒出来。
智慧的回应要求有柔和镇定的灵。毋庸置疑，任何受到掌权者发怒的人都会情绪高涨，但智慧的表现之一就是聆听情绪，却不允许它们指引我们的选择。智慧包括做出正确选择的能力，即或是在情绪的处境之下也是如此。
