夏甲意识到自己有幸与神相遇；她用头衔称呼上帝。你是看顾我的神（希伯来语El Roi ），意思是“看顾我的神”。上帝看顾一切。上帝认识夏甲，一直在守护着她。看来夏甲认定她是在直接与上帝说话，而不是与天使说话。第 10 节告诉我们，她是在与“主的天使”说话，而现在第 13 节告诉我们，主在与她说话。许多人相信这两种说法都是真的，因为向夏甲显现的上帝使者就是耶稣，他以人的形象出现，但在通过玛利亚所生而真正成为人类之前。
夏甲意识到她已经看见了上帝，并说：“我看见上帝之后还能活着吗？”换句话说，“我真的看见上帝之后还能活着吗？”看见上帝的人无法存活的想法在圣经中很常见（创世记 32:30；出埃及记 19:21、33:20；士师记 6:22-23、13:22-23）。
夏甲给这口井起名叫庇耳拉海莱，意思是：“如今我看见了那看顾我的神。”从字面上看，它的意思是“那看顾我的永生者的井”（创世记 24：62，25：11）。
夏甲听从了天使的话，回到了亚伯兰的家中，并为亚伯兰生了一个儿子。亚伯兰和撒莱接纳了夏甲。上帝应许亚伯兰会生一个儿子，现在这个应许已经实现了。亚伯兰给夏甲所生的儿子起名叫以实玛利。按照习俗，父亲要给孩子起名（创世记 5:3，21:3）。通过给以实玛利起名，亚伯兰公开承认他是自己的儿子。我们可以推断，夏甲告诉了亚伯兰和撒莱她在绿洲与上帝的相遇，因为亚伯兰给她的儿子起名为以实玛利。由此亚伯兰证实了她的相遇。这也可能是撒莱显然允许她回来的原因。
亚伯兰 75 岁时，神第一次呼召他，应许使他成为大国（创世记 24:4）。亚伯兰定居迦南地 11 年后，以实玛利出生，那时他已经86 岁了。
使徒保罗将夏甲所生的孩子与西奈山上颁布的律法作了比较。夏甲和以实玛利的故事将成为一个例子，说明人类的努力无法产生上帝的正义。上帝的正义只能来自上帝的力量，这将通过撒莱奇迹般地生下以撒来说明。遵守规则也是如此。遵守规则并不能在上帝眼中创造正义。只有接受上帝通过耶稣提供的免费礼物才能在上帝眼中创造正义。（加拉太书 4:21-5:1）。
