当夏甲在书珥的旷野中接近埃及的边界时，耶和华的使者在一处泉水旁遇见了她。“天使”（希伯来语Malak ）的意思是“信使”。她正前往书珥，书珥是位于迦南西南部和埃及东北边界之间的一片荒野地区（创世记 20:1、25:18；出埃及记 15:22；撒母耳记上 15:7、27:8）。
在夏甲开口说话之前，天使/信使知道了她的名字、地位和主母的身份，称她为夏甲，撒莱的使女。在明确表示他知道她是谁后，信使问道：“你从哪里来，要去哪里？”夏甲回答说： “我要逃离我的主母撒莱。 ”
天使告诉夏甲回到她的主人身边，服从她的权威。上帝命令夏甲服从撒莱。她不应该鄙视她，而应该服从她的权威。这很有趣，因为经文告诉我们撒莱的待遇很严厉。使者命令她无论如何都要回去服从。但使者也承诺如果她服从，就会得到祝福。上帝会给夏甲一个承诺，并为她的服从提供实质性的激励。
