上帝不允许莎拉撒谎，指出她确实笑了。也许上帝在说“如果我知道你在想什么，难道我就没有能力让你生个儿子吗？”来增强莎拉的信心。莎拉被奉为信心的典范，却像我们一样挣扎，这一事实表明了上帝的仁慈，给了我们巨大的希望。上帝是充满机会的上帝。
然后，那两个人从那里站起来，朝所多玛望去。这个有利位置可能是希伯伦以东三英里的高地村庄贝尼纳伊姆。在晴朗的日子里，透过山间的空隙可以看到南面十八英里处的死海。亚伯拉罕与他们同行，送别他们，仍然表现得像一个亲切的主人。
上帝了解亚伯拉罕。他知道他的性格。他考虑是否应该告诉亚伯拉罕他计划做什么，于是问他的两个天使同伴： “我要向亚伯拉罕隐瞒我将要做的事吗？”
上帝决定告诉亚伯拉罕他要毁灭所多玛，因为他答应让他成为 伟大而强大的国家。亚伯拉罕代表未来的以色列国，地球上的所有国家都将因他而受到祝福。这就是上帝决定不向亚伯拉罕隐瞒任何事情的动机（创世记 12:2-3,7，13:14-17，15:1-5，17:1-6）。
