亚伯拉罕的仆人担心找不到愿意跟他回迦南的女子，就问亚伯拉罕：“倘若女子不肯跟我到这地来，我要将你的儿子带回你原出之地吗？”（第 5 节）
亚伯拉罕的回答充满激情，你要当心，不要把我的儿子带回那里！答案是，不，以撒无论如何都不应该去哈兰。原因与履行亚伯拉罕与上帝的约定有关。他向他的仆人解释说，耶和华，天上的上帝，带我离开我父亲的家和我出生的土地，对我说话，对我发誓，说，‘我要把这片土地赐给你的后代。’
亚伯拉罕现在扎根在迦南。这是应许之地，上帝宣布他的后代将在这里建立一个国家。他的继承人以撒必须留在迦南。
亚伯拉罕确信主会帮助他完成这项使命。他声称上帝会派天使在仆人出发之前送他上路，然后你就会在那里为我儿子娶一个妻子。亚伯拉罕心里对此深信不疑。
但他又勉励仆人，使他不惧怕所起的誓的重担，说：“若是女子不肯跟你来，我叫你起的誓就与你无干，只是不可带我的儿子回那里去。”
如果亚伯拉罕的家乡没有女人愿意嫁给以撒，那么仆人就不必担心受到惩罚。他已经尽了最大努力找到妻子，但如果没有女人愿意，那不是他的错。他将摆脱对亚伯拉罕的誓言。但亚伯拉罕再次警告以撒不要去美索不达米亚，只是不要把我的儿子带回那里。亚伯拉罕定居在迦南，这是上帝应许给他的土地。他和他的儿子都不会放弃它。
