上帝诅咒了蛇。诅咒是祝福的直接反义词，不应与现代意义上的亵渎相混淆。这里使用的“诅咒”一词是希伯来语arar ，意思是“分开以折磨痛苦或审判”。上帝诅咒蛇，将其排在所有其他动物的最后，并迫使它在泥土中爬行。这句话表达了蛇从上帝那里得到的羞辱。我们在旧约圣经《弥迦书》7:17 中看到这个措辞，他们必像蛇一样舔土，像地上的爬行动物一样。他们会战兢地从他们的堡垒中出来。这个诅咒似乎对蛇这种生物产生了影响，蛇以前不会在泥土中爬行，也对撒旦产生了影响，他的头会被压碎（任何遇到毒蛇的人都会这样做）。
