现在上帝命令诺亚进入方舟。诺亚一直忠实地建造方舟，现在是进入的时候了。上帝重申诺亚将得救，因为在这段时间里，只有诺亚在上帝眼中被视为义人。诺亚是义人，因此上帝在命令建造方舟时可以信任他。诺亚在上帝眼中是无可指责的，但他的全家也从洪水中得救了。诺亚与上帝的和睦使他的全家蒙福。但这也使动物王国蒙福。上帝利用诺亚的服从使地球上所有有呼吸的动物的后代得以存活。

诺亚被告知要带上方舟，每只洁净的动物带七对，不洁净的动物带两对，一公一母。这是第一次用“洁净”来描述动物。几个世纪后，圣经描述了洁净的动物。在给以色列人的律法中，洁净的动物是可以吃的。然而，直到创世纪 9:3，上帝才允许人类吃动物，而且在那条命令中，他没有区分洁净和不洁净。我们没有被告知上帝向诺亚解释洁净和不洁净的区别，但由于诺亚在方舟着陆后立即献祭了洁净的动物，显然他知道这一点。
上帝警告诺亚，再过七天，大地上就会下四十天四十夜的雨。上帝明确表示了这场洪水的预期影响，说：“我要把我所造的一切生物从地上消灭。”诺亚再次按照上帝命令他的一切去做了。
动物得救是为了维持生命，并重新繁衍生息。第 4 节中的短语“一切生物”是指地球上存在的一切。洪水消灭了或抹去了所有存在的东西。诺亚做了上帝所命令的一切，这显然是强调，重复了最近在创世记 6:22 中所说的内容，其中也说诺亚做了上帝命令他做的一切。
