洪水淹没了大地四十天。暴雨在地上持续了四十天四十夜。然而，洪水持续了一百一十天。我们不知道方舟在水面上漂浮之前下了多久的雨，但我们知道方舟浮在水面上。
第 18-19 节证明洪水是全球性事件，而非局部洪水，并显示了破坏的规模。水位不只是上涨，洪水猛烈而强大，淹没了整个地球。整个山脉都被水淹没。事实上，天下所有的高山都被水淹没。经文甚至重复强调这是全球性事件：水势高出十五肘，山被淹没。在第 20 节中，十五肘相当于高出山约二十二英尺的水位。我们不知道当时山有多高。
