先知约珥发出了最后一次哀悼的呼吁。这一次，他向祭司们讲话，祭司们是履行犹大宗教职责的专业人士。他用一系列的命令敦促祭司们哀悼并寻求上帝的恩惠。他首先说，祭司啊，你们要披上麻布哀悼；祭坛的仆人啊，你们要哀号！
在古代，哀悼的人通常会用麻布束腰，麻布是一种用山羊毛或骆驼毛制成的衣服，粗糙且不舒服。穿麻布象征着悲伤或绝望。例如，当雅各认为一只野兽吞噬了他的儿子约瑟时，他“撕裂衣服，腰间围上麻布，为他儿子悲哀了多日”（创世记 37:34）。同样，约珥要求祭司们穿上麻布，哀悼以表达他们的损失，因为蝗灾摧毁了犹大地。
祭坛的侍从指的是祭司，因为他们是履行宗教职责的专业人士。这些宗教人士要哀号、哀号，在耶和华面前表达他们的悲伤，并恳求他的恩惠。于是，先知继续呼唤祭司们，说： “来吧，我神的侍从啊，今夜你们要披上麻布。”自从蝗灾发生以来，入侵的军队就是宗主神的惩罚，约珥恳求祭司们在神面前谦卑自己，寻求神的同在。
由于蝗灾造成的灾难程度之深，人们不禁要哀悼，约珥呼吁祭司们禁食。禁食是出于宗教目的而故意暂时禁食。它不是表达个人意愿的方式，而是向上帝敞开心扉、表达对罪孽的悲痛和悔恨、将自己引向上帝的方式。它包括向上帝祈求并寻求指引和智慧。从这个意义上说，这是一个通往净化的过程（诗篇 69:10）。
