这一教导的对应记载是在路加福音 12:6-7 和路加福音 21:18。
让门徒注意到他在要求他们为他而死之后，耶稣向他们保证，神非常注重他们的生命。耶稣让门徒思考飞鸟。两个麻雀不是卖一分银子吗？反问的回答是肯定的。两个麻雀卖一分银子，字面意思是一枚 "assarium" (一种罗马硬币，价值一 drachma 的十分之一)，这一事实强调了麻雀的价值非常小。但是，即或麻雀在社会上的价值极小，但耶稣告诉门徒说，如果没有你们掌权之父允许它们掉在地上，它们当中就没有一个会死。神甚至都看顾麻雀。

耶稣向门徒保证，所以，不要惧怕，你们的父爱你们，祂珍视你们。你们比许多麻雀还贵重！这就肯定了一点：神不是在要求门徒愚蠢地、毫无美好理由地舍命。祂是在要求你为祂的缘故舍命。你们不要惧怕你们的生或死在你们父的眼中会是毫无意义的。
推论：如果神看重麻雀和它们的掉落，祂一定会看重你们和你们为祂的缘故所做的任何舍己和所遇到的任何麻烦，无论它们是大是小。但是，你们的父不只是留意你们的生命和你们为祂所做的舍己，祂也珍视你们，因为你们比许多麻雀还贵重。
