这一事件的对应福音记载是在马可福音 7:14-15。
反驳了从耶路撒冷而来的法利赛人之后，耶稣就叫了众人来聚集，准备提出法利赛人反对门徒的控告。
法利赛人称耶稣的门徒是不洁净的，推而及之便称耶稣是一个不合法的道德权威，因为他们饭前不洗手，违背了古人的遗传 (马太福音 15:2)。在他的回答中，耶稣痛斥了法利赛人，并暴露了他们道德上的假冒为善，但他从未否定他们的指控。
现在，他叫众人听 (专心聆听) 并明白 (仔细思考) 他即将要告诉他们的一句类似比喻的原创箴言。这是耶稣的回应，使自己摆脱了法利赛人的毁谤。
入口的不能污秽人，出口的乃能污秽人。
耶稣是在向他们解释，使一个人不洁或有罪的不是身体上的不洁或所吃的食物，而是他的所言(和所为)。定他罪的是他的话，不是他的饮食或吃饭习惯。
通过叫众人要听，也要明白，耶稣是在邀请他们辨识心灵内在公义的更大价值，而非表现在外的外在价值。言语通常揭示内心的动机。耶稣在路加福音这样说：
"善人从他心里所存的善就发出善来；恶人从他心里所存的恶就发出恶来；因为心里所充满的，口里就说出来。" (路加福音 6:45)
他是在向众人解释，义不是法利赛人所做的表面装饰。它主要是由内而外的流露，不是由外而内。
