这一事件的对应记载是在马可福音 1:14-15 和路加福音 4:14-15。
从那时候是马太宣告耶稣公开事工开始的方式。在耶稣传起道来的时刻，他的事工就开始了。他公开传道，并说了 (施洗) 约翰所传讲的相同信息：天国近了，你们应当悔改！(马太福音 3:2)。
悔改意思是改变思想。思想的改变是通过行为的改变得以体现的。人需要悔改的原因是因为一个全新的政治秩序，天国，即将设立。它的价值观将与地上国度的价值观截然不同，比如罗马或犹太派系的政治。当被彼拉多问到他是否是犹太人的王时，耶稣回答说，"我的国不属这世界；我的国若属这世界，我的臣仆必要争战，使我不至于被交给犹太人。只是我的国不属这世界" (约翰福音 18:36)。
天国近了，因为君王耶稣已经到来。
