箴言11章17节，所罗门写道： “怜悯人的，得益处；残忍人的，害自己。”（17节）怜悯不仅是给予他人的礼物，也是行怜悯之人的祝福。这是因为上帝设计人类生活，使公义与真正的利己最终能够和谐一致。
仁慈的人最终也会受益，因为仁慈体现了上帝的品格，使人心倾向于爱而非冷酷。仁慈使人免于被苦毒、复仇或冷漠的自我保护所支配。
残忍的人最终会伤害自己，因为残忍会腐蚀施行者的灵魂。即使残忍在当下看似强烈，它也会损害人的内心，使人变得不如上帝的旨意。在福音书中，耶稣也教导说，怜悯人的人有福了（要了解更多关于怜悯如何体现基督“施予怜悯的人必蒙怜悯”的教导，请阅读我们对马太福音5:7的注释）。
