保罗对我们与以色列的关系做了一个类比：有几根枝子被折下来 (不信的犹太人)，外邦人像野橄榄树，得接在被培育的橄榄树折断的树枝上，一同得着橄榄根的肥汁，接受根的好处和健康。
橄榄树是以色列的一个象征。在这一类比中，以色列是橄榄树根，折断的树枝代表不信的犹太人。外邦人是被接上的野橄榄枝子。在 18 节中，保罗说，不可向旧枝子夸口。原本的枝子是犹太人。外邦人没有什么可夸的，也不比以色列人优越。神按祂的恩典救赎外邦人，祂也对以色列的回归有所计划。外邦人被嫁接于以色列，是被嫁接于神给以色列的应许之上。基督教并不是脱离于神与犹太人关系以外的事物，而是犹太教的一个延伸，是神应许的延续。我们拥有因信称义的应许正是亚伯拉罕相同的应许。我们都是亚伯拉罕的儿女，因为我们都是应许之子 (罗马书 9:8)。外邦人当知道不是你托着根，乃是根托着你。
在这一书信中，保罗是在回答与之竞争的犹太 "权威"，因他们毁谤保罗，并说他的教导是假教义。他在拒绝他们的教义，也在拒绝他们本身。他在清楚地表明，以色列并没有完全被神弃绝。保罗在其它地方也是如此清晰。在保罗写给以弗所的书信中，他说外邦人 "在以色列国民以外"，但因耶稣被纳入了这一福分中 (以弗所书 2:12)。
