使徒保罗写这封信给罗马信徒 (他们的信德传遍了天下，1:8)，称他们为弟兄们。在这封书信中，他正在处理罗马与之竞争的犹太 "权威" 的毁谤性言论，他们歪曲了保罗所传讲的福音。在 3:8 中，保罗明确地引用了毁谤性言论，"为什么不说，我们可以作恶以成善呢？这是毁谤我们的人说我们有这话。这等人定罪是该当的。"

在第 2、3 节中，保罗向他的听众举了一个已婚妇人的例子。就如女人有了丈夫，丈夫还活着，就被律法约束 (她将自己许给了丈夫，直到 "死将我们分开"，所以在他还活着时，她就受约于丈夫的律法)；丈夫若死了，就脱离了丈夫的律法。所以丈夫活着，她若归于别人，便叫淫妇，欺骗者。
但是，如果丈夫死了，她嫁给了另一个男人，那么她就不是欺骗者或淫妇，因为她不再在之前的婚姻誓言之下了。丈夫若死了，她就脱离了丈夫的律法。"直至死亡将我们分开" 的承诺已经兑现了，因为死将她和之前的丈夫分开了。虽然归于别人，也不是淫妇。
同样，我们已经从律法的要求中得释放，因为我们在相信耶稣时，就已经受洗归入基督的死。
