在相信耶稣之前，我们就活在律法的管辖和权柄之下，但当我们相信耶稣的死、埋葬和复活成为我们罪的赎价时，就脱离了律法 (3:23-27)。当我们成为信徒时，就无需再服侍律法了；我们蒙召要在圣灵的新生中服事。
当我们在律法之下时，就有义务顺服律法，却没有能力如此行。但是，当我们相信耶稣时，就在恩典的新生下服事，是藉着所赐给我们的信心和耶稣复活的大能来活出新的生命，在捆我们的律法上死了；是藉着心灵 (圣灵) 的新样给我们的。就像在配偶过世之后再婚一样，你不再受约于之前的配偶，而是新的配偶。这就像从初中毕业升高中一样，学生不再受约于初中校长的权下，而是高中校长的权下。同样，保罗向他的听众表明，那些相信的人应当在圣灵的新样下服事，不按着仪文 (律法) 的旧样。
