耶和华继续向犹大邻国发出审判的信息。这一次，审判落在了南部的埃塞俄比亚。上帝没有多说埃塞俄比亚的土地，也没有说明审判的原因。他只是宣布了这个国家的灭亡，说：埃塞俄比亚人啊，你们也要被我的刀杀掉（第 12 节）。
译作埃塞俄比亚人的希伯来语是“库实人”。它指的是非洲努比亚地区的居民。库实所指的地区不是现代的埃塞俄比亚，而是埃及南部尼罗河沿岸的地区。这个地方也被称为努比亚，大致相当于现代的苏丹。
古实人（或埃塞俄比亚人）是含的长子古实的后裔（创世记 10:6；历代志上 1:8）。古实一词的意思是“黑色”，而从历史上看，古实人的皮肤是深色的（耶利米书 13:23）。摩西娶了一位古实妻子（民数记 12:1）。我们只知道这些埃塞俄比亚人将被上帝的剑杀死。剑的形象意味着埃塞俄比亚人将在战斗中被击败。
