The Bible Says
Mark 13:24-27 Meaning

As part of His teaching on the Mount of Olives-an elevated ridge just east of Jerusalem, where Jesus (who ministered between AD 26-30 and was crucified around AD 30-33) explained future events-He prophesies cosmic disturbances, declaring, But in those days, after that tribulation, THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT(Mark 13:24) to emphasize how creation itself will reflect the turmoil of that time. Jesus describes a period when normal patterns will be drastically disrupted. By using imagery of the darkened sun and moon, He connects to a theme found in biblical prophecy that signals an extraordinary divine intervention in human affairs (see Joel 2:31 and Revelation 6:12).

He continues with the startling picture, AND THE STARS WILL BE FALLING from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken (v. 25). This language conveys a collapse of familiar cosmic order, suggesting not just disruptions on earth but also the removal of any false sense of security that humanity might have. By highlighting stars falling and heavenly powers trembling, Jesus underscores the ultimate sovereignty of God over every force, both visible and invisible, reminding believers that no matter how permanent or enduring something may seem, only the Lord’s kingdom truly endures (Isaiah 24:19-23).

The promise of divine assurance then comes when Jesus prophesies, Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN CLOUDS with great power and glory (v. 26). In this remarkable statement, He refers to Himself by the title “Son of Man,” tying His identity to Daniel’s prophecy (Daniel 7:13-14) and showing that the same One who teaches in humility on earth will return victoriously. He affirms His authority further by explaining how He will gather His people: And then He will send forth the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest end of the earth to the farthest end of heaven (v. 27). This description of angels gathering the faithful demonstrates Jesus’ role not only as the Messiah of Israel but also as the Savior who claims believers from every corner of the globe.
