In Proverbs 10:1, Solomon opens this new section of short sayings by writing, A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish son is a grief to his mother (v. 1). Solomon, the son of David and king of Israel, reigned from Jerusalem around 970–930 BC. The proverbs attributed to him reflect the practical wisdom of a king who understood that character shapes not only a person’s own life, but also the lives of those around him. This first proverb begins in the home because wisdom is first seen in close relationships.
A wise son is not merely intelligent or skilled. In Proverbs, wisdom means living in the fear of the Lord and aligning one’s choices with God’s design. When a child learns to receive instruction, walk humbly, and act with integrity, that child becomes a source of deep joy to his parents. The gladness of the father is not just emotional satisfaction; it is the delight of seeing righteousness take root in the next generation.
By contrast, a foolish son is a grief to his mother. Folly is not harmless immaturity; it is a path that produces sorrow, disorder, and pain. A foolish life burdens the family because sin is never private for long. This verse reminds us that wisdom blesses communities, starting with the household, and that godly character in one person can become joy to many others.
