In Proverbs 10:10, Solomon says, He who winks the eye causes trouble, and a babbling fool will be ruined (v. 10). The image of winking the eye suggests secretive manipulation, hidden schemes, or deceptive signals passed between people with dishonest intent. Folly is not always loud; sometimes it is subtle and sly.
This kind of behavior causes trouble because it undermines trust. Human relationships depend on truthfulness, but manipulation introduces confusion and concealed motives. A person who communicates through deceit rather than honesty becomes a source of instability in the community.
The repeated phrase about the babbling fool shows that manipulative secrecy and reckless speech are both forms of folly. One hides behind coded signals; the other hides behind noise. In both cases, truth is abandoned, and ruin follows. Wisdom, by contrast, is straightforward, clear, and faithful.
