In Proverbs 10:26, Solomon says, Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is the lazy one to those who send him (v. 26). This proverb vividly describes the irritation and frustration caused by an unreliable person. The lazy do not merely hinder themselves; they burden others.
Vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes are sharp, uncomfortable irritants. In the same way, a lazy messenger causes disappointment, inefficiency, and pain to those depending on him. He cannot be trusted to carry out what was entrusted to him.
This matters because biblical wisdom is communal. We are often sent, tasked, or entrusted with responsibilities that affect other people. Laziness is not just a private weakness. It is a failure of stewardship that injures relationships and disrupts shared work.
