In Proverbs 10:8, Solomon writes, The wise of heart will receive commands, but a babbling fool will be ruined (v. 8). Wisdom begins with teachability. A wise person is not defined by having all the answers, but by having a heart willing to receive instruction.
To be wise of heart means that wisdom has reached the inner person. This is more than mental skill; it is humility, receptiveness, and submission to what is true. The wise know they need direction, and because of that, they are able to grow. They receive commands because they recognize rightful authority and understand that correction is part of life.
The babbling fool, however, talks instead of listens. He trusts his own speech more than truth coming from outside himself. That is why he is ruined. His words reveal a heart that will not receive instruction. James later echoes this principle when he urges believers to be quick to hear and slow to speak (James 1:19).
