In Proverbs 11:15, Solomon writes, He who is guarantor for a stranger will surely suffer for it, but he who hates being a guarantor is secure (v. 15). This proverb addresses financial entanglement and the danger of reckless obligation. Solomon is not opposing generosity, but warning against unwise commitments.
To become guarantor for a stranger meant taking on another person’s debt or liability without sufficient knowledge or relationship. That kind of impulsive pledge exposed a person to harm because it yoked his future to uncertainty beyond his stewardship.
The one who hates being a guarantor is secure because he understands limits. Wisdom includes knowing that not every opportunity to appear helpful is actually faithful. Good stewardship requires discernment, not merely sentiment.
