The Bible Says
Proverbs 11:22 Meaning

In Proverbs 11:22, Solomon says, As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout so is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion (v. 22). This proverb uses a striking and almost jarring image. Gold is precious, and beauty is a real gift, but when beauty is disconnected from discretion, the result is deeply out of place.

The comparison is not an insult to beauty, but a warning against valuing outward attractiveness above inward wisdom. Discretion is the ability to perceive rightly and act fittingly. Without it, beauty becomes misaligned with its proper purpose and setting.

Proverbs frequently insists that the inner life gives meaning to the outer one. Just as a gold ring cannot transform a pig into something fitting for adornment, outward beauty cannot replace character. True attractiveness in biblical wisdom includes the formed heart.
