In Proverbs 11:9, Solomon writes, With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous will be delivered (v. 9). Words are one of the chief concerns of Proverbs, and here Solomon shows how speech can become an instrument of destruction. The godless use the mouth to damage others.
To destroy his neighbor with words includes slander, manipulation, lies, false witness, and corrosive speech. Community depends on truth and when speech is weaponized, relationships and justice are both threatened. Proverbs repeatedly treats this as a serious moral evil.
But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered. Knowledge here is practical wisdom rooted in God’s truth. It allows the righteous to see clearly, respond wisely, and avoid being swept away by deception. Jesus likewise teaches that truth sets people free (John 8:32).
