The warning expressed in Proverbs 14:12 by Solomon reveals that There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death (v. 12). This is one of Proverbs’s clearest warnings against self-reliance. Human perception is not a sufficient guide by itself.
A way may seem right because it fits our preferences, emotions, or limited reasoning. But appearances can mislead. What feels wise, liberating, or harmless may actually be crooked. Solomon insists that sincerity alone does not make a path safe.
Its end is the way of death. In Proverbs, death often means separation from God’s good design and the flourishing life He intends. This proverb echoes the broader biblical contrast between the narrow way that leads to life and the broad way that leads to destruction (to learn more about how choosing the narrow path leads to life while the widely followed way ends in destruction, please read our commentary on Matthew 7:13-14).
