The contrast portrayed in Proverbs 14:9 reveals that Fools mock at sin, but among the upright there is good will (v. 9). Fools treat sin lightly. They laugh at what should sober them.
To mock at sin is to trivialize moral evil, to treat guilt, wrongdoing, or repentance as laughable. This is a mark of deep folly because it shows a heart out of touch with reality. Sin is destructive, and to mock it is to mock the very thing that destroys human flourishing.
Among the upright, however, there is good will. Uprightness produces favor, reconciliation, and right relationship because it takes sin seriously enough to seek what is good. Where fools joke about evil, the upright aim at restoration and peace.
