The psalmist entreats God with humility, calling upon Him in the words Deal bountifully with Your servant, That I may live and keep Your word (v. 17). He longs to remain faithful and obedient to the divine instructions set before him. Recognizing that he cannot gain true insight on his own, Psalm 119:17-24 pleads, Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Your law (v. 18). This yearning demonstrates how he values every divine precept as a source of wisdom and direction, a treasure that cannot be fully understood without God’s help.
He further expresses his sense of displacement in these words: I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me (v. 19). The psalmist feels he is passing through a world that is not his ultimate home, craving spiritual truth more than temporal comforts. With deep emotion, he confesses, My soul is crushed with longing After Your ordinances at all times (v. 20). This describes a persistent and fervent desire to be guided by the Lord’s unchanging statutes, illumination made even more vital amidst the world’s changing circumstances.
He acknowledges God’s power to correct those who resist His ways, declaring that You rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, Who wander from Your commandments (v. 21). Seeking refuge from scorn, the psalmist prays, Take away reproach and contempt from me, For I observe Your testimonies (v. 22). Despite influential figures conspiring against him, he remains steadfast in the Word: Even though princes sit and talk against me, Your servant meditates on Your statutes (v. 23). He concludes with a glorious affirmation of delight and counsel: Your testimonies also are my delight; They are my counselors (v. 24). In these final lines, the psalmist reveals how fully he depends on God’s Word as a trusted guide, a source of both comfort and counsel.
