The psalmist begins by proclaiming, I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your doings; I muse on the work of Your hands (v. 5). In this statement, David looks back on God’s history of faithfulness and carefully contemplates the extraordinary ways the Lord has moved in the world. He intentionally recalls God’s acts of mercy and deliverance to renew his own hope. David, who likely composed these words sometime around the 10th century BC during his reign as the second king of Israel, finds that dwelling on the Lord’s mighty deeds offers spiritual encouragement and a perspective that transcends his immediate distress. Psalm 143:5-6 models how reflecting on the Lord’s character can reshape one’s mindset, anchoring the soul in God’s enduring faithfulness.
Continuing in the next verse, David shares, I stretch out my hands to You; my soul longs for You, as a parched land (v. 6). This powerful imagery portrays a deep sense of need, like a barren land thirsting for rain, suggesting that only God can satisfy the dryness of his spirit. It emphasizes the psalmist’s recognition that in times of desperation, he must turn solely to the Lord for life and hope. This imagery also echoes throughout Scripture, where those who earnestly seek the Lord find refreshment and renewal in Him. In the New Testament, such longing is fulfilled in Christ, who offers living water and promises to satisfy the deepest spiritual thirst (John 7:37-38).
In both verses, David’s meditation on the Lord’s faithfulness drives his heartfelt plea, demonstrating a pattern of prayer that combines worshipful reflection with ardent supplication. By remembering how God has worked in the past, he approaches Him in the present, trusting that the same divine power that shaped ancient wonders can bring comfort and rescue in current troubles.
