When the psalmist proclaims The LORD sustains all who fall And raises up all who are bowed down (v. 14), he draws our attention to God’s tender care for the weak and discouraged. In a world filled with challenges, Psalm 145:14-16 emphasizes that no one is beyond the reach of the Lord’s compassionate attention. It highlights God’s willingness to uphold those who stumble in life’s trials and gently lift up those who have been pressed down by hardship. This truth resonates with those who trust in the Lord, finding renewed hope each time they call out in humility.
The psalm then states, The eyes of all look to You, And You give them their food in due time (v. 15). This image depicts the dependency of all living creatures upon the Lord’s timing and provision. Whether the psalmist refers to the people of Israel or creation at large, he acknowledges that every good thing ultimately comes from God’s hand. Much like Jesus fed the multitudes who came to Him, this verse reminds us that true sustenance — physical or spiritual — flows from a heavenly source, given precisely when it is needed most (to learn more about Jesus feeding the five thousand and how this miracle reflects God’s faithful provision, please read our commentary on Matthew 14:15-21).
Continuing with You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing (v. 16), the psalmist portrays God as the generous provider who grants fullness of life. He opens His hand not grudgingly, but with abundant grace, ensuring that every aspect of creation has the potential to flourish. This generous spirit is reflected in the New Testament as well, wherein the free gift of salvation and the outpouring of spiritual blessings in Christ reveal God’s open—handed kindness (Ephesians 1:3). Through these verses, we see a comprehensive picture of God’s sustaining power, meticulous provision, and boundless generosity.
