Here in Psalm 40:9-10, David continues his psalm by declaring his commitment to publicly testify of the Lord’s righteousness, saying, I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will not restrain my lips, O LORD, You know (v. 9). This statement shows David’s boldness in announcing what God has done for him, how the Lord has rescued him from trouble, and how he cannot help but proclaim the astonishing works of the Almighty. As the second king of Israel (reigning around 1010 - 970 BC), David lived in a covenant relationship with God, and regarded his life as a continual demonstration of God’s active care.
In sharing glad tidings with the “great congregation”, David’s praise was not mere private devotion. Instead, it was a communal celebration, testifying in front of the assembly of worshipers-likely people gathered near the tabernacle to honor God. David recognized that the Lord designed His people Israel to be a light in the world. Declaring the Lord’s righteousness among the congregation was a step toward elevating their faith and calling them to remember His trustworthiness.
The phrase I will not restrain my lips underscores David’s intentional choice to be unashamed of speaking about God’s faithfulness. Centuries later, believers in Jesus would recall that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. These same principles echo through all generations, reminding us to boldly share the good news of salvation and righteousness with a world that needs to hear truth.
In the next verse, David declares, I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great congregation (v. 10). David’s praise remains unguarded-he does not hold back or keep God’s righteous deeds to himself. Instead, he joyfully tells of God’s character, extolling His faithfulness toward His chosen people and proclaiming the salvation He has wrought.
David’s public witness includes highlighting two essential attributes of the Lord: lovingkindness (often understood as steadfast love) and truth. Both qualities are at the core of God’s unchanging nature, and David wants everyone to know. This consistent testimony of praise in “the great congregation” meant more than just words; it involved a lifetime of worship and obedience that inspired others to place their hope in the Lord.
Through these declarations, David models how genuine gratitude cannot remain silent. When God’s people reflect on His deliverance, they are compelled to tell others about His mercy. This extends beyond the confines of any one generation, ultimately anticipating the work of Christ, who perfectly embodied faithfulness and salvation for all who believe.
