The Bible Says
Psalm 63:9-11 Meaning

In Psalm 63:9-11, David continues his plea for God’s protection by declaring, But those who seek my life to destroy it, Will go into the depths of the earth (v. 9). David was Israel’s king from around 1010 to 970 BC, following King Saul and preceding his son Solomon. During his lifetime, he faced multiple threats against his life. This verse shows David’s trust that God will thwart and humble those who intend him harm, consigning them to utter defeat. Although it does not specify the exact enemies, David’s faith stands firm in the face of danger even while all seems uncertain.

David then paints a vivid picture of their downfall: They will be delivered over to the power of the sword; They will be a prey for foxes (v. 10). Destruction is the outcome for those who unleash deceit and violence against God’s anointed. Here, physical judgment (the sword) merges with an image of wild animals feeding on the remains, suggesting complete ruin. David’s words also echo a broader biblical theme that evil ultimately destroys itself (Romans 6). Though sometimes we do not see such final reckoning immediately, the psalmist confidently states that God’s justice will not fail.

The turn in verse 11 highlights David’s assured hope: But the king will rejoice in God; Everyone who swears by Him will glory, For the mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped (v. 11). David, as king, points to God’s deliverance and proclaims that those who devote themselves to the Lord will share in praise and joy. The false accusations will vanish under the weight of divine truth. In a larger, messianic sense, these words also prefigure Jesus as the truth who silences His opponents with the might and authority of God (John 14). For David, rejoicing in God is more than a temporary moment of victory; it is a life posture that trusts in God’s ultimate vindication.
