Psalm 72:16-17 envisions a future filled with plentiful provision when he proclaims May there be an abundance of grain in the earth on the top of the mountains; Its fruit will wave like the cedars of Lebanon; And may those from the city flourish like the vegetation of the earth (v. 16). The image of grain in seemingly impossible places underscores the abundant favor God bestows on a righteous kingdom. In ancient Israelite geography, mountains often represented places that were difficult to cultivate, yet God’s blessing brings bounty even where none seems possible.
The reference to the cedars of Lebanon also highlights extraordinary growth and strength. Lebanon is a region north of Israel known historically for its majestic cedar forests, prized by many neighboring nations for their longevity and resistance to decay. By comparing the harvest to these strong, towering trees, the psalmist indicates future flourishing that is reliable, stable, and able to withstand trials.
Finally, the phrase may those from the city flourish like the vegetation of the earth portrays how the blessings of God extend not only to agricultural abundance, but also to flourishing in urban settings. This comprehensive vision of prosperity points toward a society blessed from top to bottom — mountains, city, farmland — revealing that God’s provision can permeate every corner of life.
Continuing this hopeful portrayal, the psalmist implores, May his name endure forever; May his name increase as long as the sun shines; And let men bless themselves by him; Let all nations call him blessed (v. 17). This prayer reflects a desire for the perpetual reign of a righteous king, whom tradition connects with Solomon’s rule and, ultimately, a vision of Jesus as the everlasting King. The blessing here is not confined to one nation, but encompasses all nations around the world.
The endurance of the king’s name is associated with God’s everlasting covenant that finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ, whose name stands forever as a sign of salvation. The sunlight symbolizes endless time, and the request is that the royal name continues shining with the same constancy and universality as the sun itself. This promise of eternal remembrance affirms that those who align themselves under God’s authority will find lasting honor.
Moreover, the invitation for people to bless themselves by him implies that the king’s legacy of righteousness and blessing becomes available to everyone. As the nations recognize this chosen ruler’s favor, they share in the blessings. This universal scope hints at the broader biblical narrative, where all peoples are ultimately invited to be woven into God’s plan, culminating in the worldwide message of redemption.
