O rei Nabucodonosor teve um novo sonho que o perturbou. Seus sábios foram incapazes de interpretá-lo. Assim, ele manda chamar Daniel e o profeta, mais uma vez, vem à presença do rei para dizer-lhe o significado de seu sonho.
“Esse sonho eu, rei Nabucodonosor, o tenho visto”. Agora ele se volta a Daniel, chamando-o pelo seu nome babilônico, Beltessazar, pedindo-lhe que lhe desse a interpretação. Nabucodonosor já havia consultado aos “sábios do meu reino não me podem fazer saber a interpretação”. Daniel já havia interpretado um dos sonhos do rei e o rei reconhecia que ele era capaz, pois “em ti o espírito dos deuses santos”.
“Então, Daniel, que tinha por nome Beltessazar, ficou espantado por algum tempo, e os seus pensamentos o perturbaram”. Daniel parece saber que o sonho não era uma boa notícia para Nabucodonosor; assim, ele hesita em explicá-lo. Apesar da posição de destaque de Daniel no reino, bastaria uma palavra do rei e Daniel seria executado. Porém, Nabucodonosor o tranquiliza: "Beltessazar, não te perturbe o sonho, nem a sua interpretação". Ele lhe assegura de que, ainda que fosse uma má notícia, ele desejava que Daniel prosseguisse com a interpretação; ele apneas desejava saber o que significava o sonho.
