Daniel 7 dá um passo para atrás no tempo. Este capítulo trata de uma visão profética que Daniel teve “no primeiro ano de Belsazar, rei da Babilônia depois de Nabucodonosor”. O reinado e a vida de Belsazar terminam no capítulo 5 e Dario, o Medo, assume o governo da Babilônia depois que os medos e persas conquistaram e assumiram o domínio sobre a Babilônia. O episódio de Daniel na cova dos leões ocorreu durante o reinado de Dario, no capítulo 6.
A visão de Daniel ocorre à noite, “estando na sua cama”. Ele tem “um sonho e visões da sua cabeça”. Ao acordar, Daniel escreve o sonho. Este capítulo é o relato de Daniel sobre o sonho.
A visão começa com uma cena tempestuosa: “Os quatro ventos do céu irrompiam sobre o grande mar”. Era um oceano caótico, em trevas, movido de todos os lados por quatro ventos. A visão torna-se ainda mais estranha. Daniel vê quatro grandes bestas subindo do mar - cada uma diferente da outra. Monstros enormes e grotescos saem da água para a terra.
