Isaque foi o filho prometido a Abraão e Sara. Através dele, a nação israelita se multiplicaria e Jesus nasceria como membro de sua linhagem, representando a aliança que Deus estabeleceria com Isaque. A hora do nascimento de Isaque estava chegando. No capítulo seguinte, Deus dirá a Abraão: "Sara vos dará à luz neste tempo no próximo ano" (Gênesis 18:10,14).
“Ao acabar de falar com Abraão, Deus retirou-se dele”. Deus desapareceu da vista de Abraão. Abraão, Ismael e todos os homens de alguma forma ligados à sua família foram todos circuncidados no mesmo dia. Abraão imediatamente obedeceu às instruções de Deus e circuncidou a toda a população masculina de sua casa. Abraão cria que Deus interviria e lhe proveria um filho por meio de Sara (Romanos 4:17-19; Hebreus 11:11-12).
