Deus desejava que a terra fosse repovoada de pessoas e animais após o dilúvio. Estudos recentes estimam que o número total de espécies de animais e aves naquela época fosse de cerca de 1.500. Isso significava que Noé teria mais de 7.000 animais na arca.
Noé não precisou buscar os animais para a arca. Os animais vieram até à arca convocados por Deus. Deus trouxe dois animais de todos os tipos, macho e fêmea, para serem salvos na arca. Deus também instrui Noé a reunir alimento suficiente para ele, sua família e todos os animais.
O tema-chave do capítulo 6 de Gênesis é: "Noé obedeceu a Deus". A construção da arca foi um grande empreendimento e levou muitos anos para ser concluída. Noé, porém, não desistiu. Ele perseverou. Noé era obediente e confiava em Deus. O grande exemplo da fé de Noé é mencionado no Novo Testamento (Hebreus 11).
