Deus não deu a Noé uma revelação sobre quando o dilúvio diminuiria. Noé enviou um corvo, uma ave de rapina. O corvo não voltou: “Saindo ia e voltava, até que as águas secaram da face da terra”. Então, Noé enviou uma pomba, mas ela voltou: “Não achou onde pousar a planta do pé”.
Sete dias depois, Noé enviou a pomba novamente. Desta vez, a pomba voltou com um ramo de oliveira recém-colhido. O ramo da oliveira (símbolo da vida) era o primeiro sinal de que a vida continuaria e de que tudo ficaria bem. A terra voltaria a albergar a vida, como no início. Agora, Noé sabia que as águas haviam baixado da terra. Noé esperou mais sete dias e enviou uma terceira pomba, mas ela não voltou para ele novamente, presumivelmente porque encontrou um lugar para fazer ninho na terra.
