Mateus avança e completa o primeiro bloco da genealogia de Cristo, de Abraão ao rei Davi. Obede foi o pai de Jessé, que foi o pai do rei Davi. Mateus associa Jesus ao cumprimento da promessa de Deus feita a Abraão de abençoar a todas as nações da terra (Gênesis 12:3). Mateus estabelece que Jesus pertence à linhagem real de Davi e é herdeiro do trono da casa de Davi, o tão aguardado rei de Israel, o Messias, o Ungido. O Messias era aguardado para retomar o trono do rei Davi, com base na promessa de Deus de que alguém da linhagem de Davi se assentaria em seu trono para sempre (2 Samuel 7:13). Mateus apresenta a Cristo como sendo o cumprimento desta promessa. Um tema significativo no Novo Testamento é o de que muitas pessoas não receberam a Jesus como o Messias pelo fato de Ele não satisfazer às suas aspirações políticas.
