Após ter sido informado pelos escribas e sacerdotes sobre o local de nascimento do Messias, Herodes secretamente chama os magos e conclui quanto tempo de nsacido tinha o bebê. Seu ponto de partida foi o momento exato em que a estrela apareceu aos magos. O fato de Herodes haver perguntado quando foi que a estrela apareceu parece indicar que a estrela não havia sido um evento espetacular ao qual todos haviam notado. Apenas os magos, que estudavam as estrelas, foram capazes de reconhecer seu significado.
Herodes, assim, envia os magos a Belém para buscar e encontrar a Criança. Antes de dispensá-los, ele solicita que eles o informem sobre o local assim que A encontrassem. Herodes finge ter afeição pelo Bebê e afirma desejar ir até Ele e adorá-lo também. Na verdade, ele planeja matá-lo.
