Desde esse tempo é a forma que Mateus encontrou para proclamar o advento do ministério público de Jesus. Foi neste momento que Jesus começou a pregar e a proclamar a mesma mensagem de João (o Batizador): Arrependei-vos, pois o Reino dos Céus está próximo (Mateus 3:2).
Arrepender significa mudança de mente. Uma mudança de mente é demonstrada pela mudança do comportamento. O motivo pelo qual as pessoas precisavam se arrepender era porque uma ordem política radicalmente nova, o Reino dos Céus, estava prestes a vir à luz. Seus valores seriam muito diferentes dos valores dos reinos terrenos, tais como Roma ou a política das diversas facções judaicas. Quando perguntado por Pilatos se era o Rei dos judeus, Jesus respondeu: “O meu reino não é deste mundo. Se o meu reino fosse deste mundo, os meus súditos pelejariam, para não ser eu entregue aos judeus; mas agora o meu reino não é daqui” (João 18:36).
