Em Provérbios 10:19, Salomão escreve: Na multidão de palavras, não falta transgressão; mas quem refreia os seus lábios procede sabiamente (v. 19). Este provérbio destaca o perigo da fala descontrolada, quanto mais uma pessoa fala, mais oportunidades surgem para exageros, fofocas, julgamentos precipitados e exibicionismo tolo.
Salomão não está condenando toda a fala, mas advertindo contra o excesso. A sabedoria compreende que as palavras são poderosas e, portanto, devem ser controladas. Uma língua solta pode causar danos muito maiores do que o falante pretende. Mesmo as boas intenções podem ser prejudicadas pelo excesso de palavras ditas sem pensar.
Controlar os lábios é sinal de autocontrole e discernimento. A pessoa sábia sabe quando o silêncio é melhor do que o ruído. Tiago 3 desenvolve essa mesma ideia, mostrando como a língua é pequena e, no entanto, como ela pode influenciar ou destruir. No mundo de Deus, a sabedoria se manifesta na moderação das palavras.
