Em Provérbios 11:2, Salomão diz: Quando vem soberba, então, vem afronta; mas com os humildes está a sabedoria (v. 2). O orgulho é um dos grandes inimigos em Provérbios porque começa com a presunção de que sabemos mais do que Deus. Esse espírito sempre desvia a pessoa da verdade e, uma vez abandonada a verdade, a desonra logo a segue.
O orgulho traz desonra porque constrói uma vida sobre ilusões. A pessoa orgulhosa quer ascensão sem submissão, louvor sem serviço e importância sem fé em Deus. Mas uma vida construída sobre a auto exaltação não pode permanecer estável, porque está desvinculada da realidade. Provérbios mostra repetidamente que o mundo de Deus resiste ao orgulho porque resiste a Ele.
Em contraste, com os humildes reside a sabedoria. Humildade não é autodesprezo; é enxergar a realidade como ela é. Reconhece a necessidade, aceita instrução e confia em Deus. É por isso que humildade e sabedoria andam juntas. Tiago 4:6 repete esse princípio quando diz que Deus se opõe aos orgulhosos, mas concede graça aos humildes.
